A Conversation with Elif Şafak at Istanbul Modern

With her unique style, author Elif Şafak treats of many challenging subjects ranging from the different states of existence and manifestations of identity in Turkey to the transformations of the individual. The author will be at Istanbul Modern to talk about her new novel “Ustam ve Ben” (literal translation: “My Master and I” – official English title still to be announced). Set during the Ottoman era, Şafak’s novel is about the elephant Çota and its keeper Cihan, an apprentice of the architect Mimar Sinan, who came to Istanbul from India in the 16th century. Elif Şafak will meet her readers on Saturday, January 4 at Istanbul Modern and hold a talk on this period novel about love, labor, and power, and the conflicts between these.
