Observation, Interpretation, Multiplicity Influences, Relations, Oppositions in 20th Century Turkish Painting

Istanbul Modern’s first collection exhibition,“Observation, Interpretation, Multiplicity” which was İstanbul Moderns first endeavor, organized with the intent of presenting a fresh new perspective on Turkish Painting history and of reinterpreting this history in the light of its affinities, influences, relations and oppositions.

The Observation, Interpretation, Multiplicity exhibition gave the spectator the opportunity of reviving the 100 year journey of Turkish painting by entirely detaching itself from the course of chronology and the traditional categorization of period / movement, and by encompassing this journey as extensively as possible under the aegis of the meaning scopes of eight concepts.

The paintings which have been chosen from more than 100 painters starting from the early 20th century and which have been brought together under thematic groups such as "Enchanted Landscape-Counter-City", "Mystery of Mind-Beyond Intuition", "Faerie Form-Deviant Body", "Touching Time" and "If Walls Could Speak"; offered the opportunity of observing the influences, proximity and associations between works of different periods or style via a "joint/opposing" exhibition layout, and also provided the chance to learn, explore, and feel one of the most important elements of modern Turkish art with the help of a diverse approach.
