FULL MOON

FULL MOON, 1987

Turkey | DVD, Color, 100’ | Turkish
Director: Şahin Kaygun
Cast: Macit Koper, Aslı Altan, Kenan Bal

Though she married out of love, Biriçim is unable to find happiness with her husband. Because of her depression she even grows distant from her love of painting. She doesn’t even know what she is looking for. With the arrival of a guest at their home Biriçim’s life changes. Like a portrait from her past, this guest will revive her lost memories and plungeher into an unpredictable passion. Exploring an existentialist problematic, “Full Moon” also represents well the cinema of the 80s with its strange melancholy, as well as its individual crises and voids in an enclosed space. The film was included in La Semaine de la Critique at the Cannes Film Festival. Critic Alain Bellet commented “Folkloric Turkey, laden with exoticism and good feelings, leaves the stage here”, and added that, after directors who stoked foreigners’ thirst for the ethnic, Kaygun’s film dealt with the problematic of mere existence in a magnificent manner.
