Of Snails and Men

Of Snails and Men (Despre oameni si melci), 2012

Romania, France | DCP, Color, 100’ | Romanian
Director: Tudor Giurgiu

It’s 1992 in the small town of Câmpulung Muscel in Romania. Michael Jackson’s Dangerous tour is coming to the country and spirits are high. But the state-owned car factory has gone bankrupt and will be privatized in a week. George Petrescu, the union leader, has an idea to save the factory and the workers: If a thousand workers sold their sperm within a week, they could raise enough money to buy the plant! The director’s second feature film, which was screened at the Istanbul Film Festival, is a bittersweet comedy that criticizes the hypocrisy, injustice, and cynicism of post-Communist Europe.
