Matryoshka Movies January 14–31, 2010

In collaboration with the Marmara University Faculty of Communications, from January 14th to 31st İstanbul Modern Cinema will be focusing on “metacinema”– a filmmaking device that is but little used in Turkey. “Matryoshka Movies” is a program of films that part the veil that normally conceals the inscrutable world of cinema to give us a glimpse of a filmmaker’s emotional state, the stresses involved in cinematic creation, and the “inside story” of the movie industry: Its subject in other words is films whose subject is films. By exposing the “smoke and mirrors” involved in filmmaking such films deliberately create an awareness among viewers that what they are viewing is really a movie.
