“Are you still making movies? Haven’t you given up with that? What’re you making a movie for? Don’t tell me. It’s the same-old same old, year after year...” The speaker is a movie-industry old-timer who’s converted his movie theater into a furniture store. Our hero-director Ali just can’t adapt to the demands of the cinema market today and still insists on making the films that he wants and not the ones that others want. He sets out on a trip to find a location for his next movie and the trip turns into a journey in which he not only searches for himself but, having found himself, flees from what he discovers. Gece Yolculuğu (Night Journey), a work by Ömer Kavur, a talented “auteur” of a filmmaker who frequently dealt with such themes as alienation, loneliness, exclusion, time, and death, is an expedition into the world of filmmakers that is certainly worth signing up for.
